What's the difference between RG6, RG59, and RG58 coaxial cable?

RG6 is the thickest and most common coax, used for CATV, satellite, and general video/CCTV runs. RG59 is a thinner cable typically used for shorter analog video and CCTV runs. RG58 is a 50 Ohm cable used for legacy ThinNet Ethernet networking and RF/ham radio applications rather than video.

What does the impedance rating (75 Ohm vs. 50 Ohm) mean on a coaxial cable?

Impedance has to match the equipment on both ends of the run. 75 Ohm is the video and broadcast standard used by RG6 and RG59 cable, while 50 Ohm is used for data and RF applications like RG58. Mixing impedances causes signal reflection and loss, so always match the cable to the equipment's rated impedance.

What's the difference between a BNC connector and an F-Type connector?

BNC is a twist-lock connector standard in professional and broadcast video, CCTV, and test equipment. F-Type is a screw-on connector standard for residential cable and satellite TV equipment. Both are available across the RG6 coax line.

Yes. The RG6 and RG59 lines use Dual Shield construction (foil plus braid) to block RF/EMI interference, and the RG58 line uses the same Dual Shield build. This keeps signal integrity consistent over the length of the run.

Can RG6 or RG58 coax be used for computer networking?

RG6 is built for video/CATV signal, not standard networking. RG58 was historically used for ThinNet Ethernet networking, but modern networks use twisted-pair Ethernet cable instead, so RG58 today is mainly used for RF and legacy equipment rather than a computer network.
