Frequently asked questions
What is an XLR cable used for?
XLR cables are the professional standard balanced-audio connector for microphones, powered speakers, mixers, and other pro audio equipment, providing a secure locking connection for a single balanced audio channel.

What's the difference between XLR Male and XLR Female connectors?
XLR Female typically plugs into an output, such as a microphone or a mixer's output. XLR Male typically plugs into an input, such as a mixer's input or a powered speaker. Each end of the cable needs to be the opposite gender of the device jack it's connecting to, since that's what lets the two physically mate.

Are XLR connections balanced or unbalanced?
XLR is the standard balanced-audio connector used for microphones and pro audio gear. When adapted to an unbalanced connector like RCA or 3.5mm, the connection becomes unbalanced, which is fine for short runs but more susceptible to noise over long distances than a balanced XLR-to-XLR run.

What's the difference between a mono and a stereo 1/4 inch plug?
A mono (TS) 1/4 inch plug carries a single audio channel, commonly used for instruments and mono line-level connections. A stereo (TRS) 1/4 inch plug carries left and right channels, or a balanced mono signal, over the same connector.

Can I use an XLR-to-RCA or XLR-to-3.5mm cable to connect a microphone to a home receiver or PC?
Yes, these adapter cables let you connect a device with an XLR output or input, such as a mixer, to equipment using RCA or 3.5mm connectors, such as a home receiver, PC sound card, or portable recorder. A bare microphone is mic-level, though, and usually needs a preamp or audio interface first — plugging it straight into a line-level RCA or 3.5mm input will sound very quiet.

Yes, every XLR cable in this lineup carries Vivid AV's Lifetime Warranty.
