North Minnesota region is set to receive a substantial broadband upgrade.Created: 5/2/2011 8:17:46 AMRural parts of Northern Minnesota are the next in line to make the change to advanced fiber-optic connectivity. According to the Duluth News Tribune, residents of the Arrowhead region will witness a $43.5 million project this summer that is intended to supply critical internet services to the area.
The news source reports that one of the projects highlights is that it will bring 1 gigabit connectivity to the affected region, which will improve bandwidth size and internet speeds.
"For a number of sites we will connect to, initially, the [internet] speed is increased by 100-fold" Paul Brinkman, executive director of the Northeast Service Cooperative, told the media outlet.
The network will likely prioritize its availability, as schools and municipal institutions are slated to be among the first recipients, reports the news source. Afterwards, private telecommunications companies will be allowed to deliver the service to their customers.
The state of Minnesota is set to receive additional fiber-optic networks. According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, an installation project in the city's metro west district is intended to use the cable's advanced communication speeds to better facilitate traffic patterns.
