Broadband set to go live in Coon RapidsCreated: 4/26/2011 5:29:40 PMThe small municipality of Coon Rapids, Minnesota is entering the age of advanced internet in a big way. According to ABC Newspapers, the plan to install a fiber-optic network in the city and its surrounding areas has just received approval from civic leaders and government organizations.
The main fees associated with the project are the costs to connect and maintain the new broadband network, as well as upgrading several government facilities that are not yet up to fiber-optic standards. However, the news source reports that these pricing demands will be greatly aided by a federal government grant, which is set to pay for 70 percent of the project.
The grant, which is an extension of the Broadband Stimulus, will total more than $13. 3 million. The remaining tab will be picked up by the city and telecommunications company Zayo.
Fiber-optic cables will provide a direct link to 145 network anchor locations, which include schools, municipal buildings and a University of Minnesota facility.
Minnesota is a state oriented toward widespread fiber-optic connectivity. According to the Duluth News Tribune, a massive rural broadband project was recently undertaken in the state's isolated northern regions. The price tag of this initiative is expected to be $43.5 million
