Stanford University gets fiber broadbandCreated: 10/21/2010 2:30:32 PMStanford University will be the first recipient of a new fiber optic cable from a major online company, acting as its initial test run. The homes of 850 faculty and staff will receive a fiber broadband network capable of internet speeds up to 1GB per second, which is 100 times faster than typical internet speeds, reports Techeye.
Stanford was chosen for the test for several reasons, says James Kelly, a producer for the company. “Most important was Stanford’s openness to us experimenting with new fiber technologies on its streets. The layout of the residential neighborhoods and small number of homes make it a good fit for a beta deployment,” he said in a blog post.
Kelly also reiterated that the test was separate from still ongoing community selection for fiber optic broadband services. “Our ultimate goal is to build to at least 50,000 and potentially up to 500,000 people,” he said.
The company plans to announce the selected communities for its fiber optics service some time in the coming months.
