Rural areas of Oklahoma to get high-speed boostCreated: 8/31/2010 9:30:38 PMHigh-speed infrastructure has become an important asset in making the U.S. a more competitive nation across the country. Providing schools, businesses and healthcare industries with fast internet connections allows them to take on new initiatives and compete tasks more efficiently.
Recently, the federal government allocated $74 million to Oklahoma to improve the states infrastructure, the Edmond Sun reports. The funding will target rural and underserved areas in the state to help boost prosperity and parity.
The money will pay for more than 1,000 miles of fiber-optic cables, which will be installed along highways and interstates in 33 of the states counties. These cables will connect to anchor institutions, such as universities and hospitals.
Many states have applied for technology upgrades to make their cities more appealing and attractive for businesses. When a company relocates to a new town, they generally bring employment opportunities and increased tax revenue, which can help a rural or economically challenged area grow.
Schools that have access to high-speed internet can offer students new interactive academic programs, helping promote more life-long learners.
