Cabling solutions increase usability of megapixel camerasCreated: 10/20/2010 12:10:57 PMAdvances in cabling, specifically CAT 5 and CAT 6 cables, have made it possible for megapixel cameras to become more commonly adopted, Security Info Watch reports.
At one time, megapixel cameras were only applicable as surveillance solutions for specialized facilities. Issues of cost and power use had provided barriers to the mainstream implementation of megapixel technology.
CAT 5 and CAT 6 cables are less expensive to install than previously used
computer cable solutions, and are capable of carrying signals over longer distances. They also can be equipped with power-over-Ethernet technology, allowing the wires to carry power to the camera while also transporting audio and video signals.
The power reduction created by power-over-Ethernet can substantially decrease costs while using megapixel cameras. Historically, surveillance installations would have to provide a separate power source for each device, making it expensive to deploy the technology.
Power-over-Ethernet technology can also benefit security systems based around VoIP. CAT 5 and CAT 6 cables connecting cameras can provide the necessary infrastructure for VoIP networks from one centralized power source.
