Police in Havelock, North Carolina, are seeking information relating to a recent spate of copper wire thefts in the area. The thefts have amounted to thousands of dollars in losses, reports Havelock News.

The main targets for copper wire theft have been air-conditioning units, says Havelock Police Chief G. Wayne Cyrus. Wires have been stolen from several establishments, including an animal hospital and a Salvation Army building.

“The air-conditioning units that they appear to be targeting are Ruud, Fedders and Goodman,” Cyrus said. “In researching these particular units, these units have more copper than other units have.”

No copper thefts from residences have been reported. Cyrus said the thieves are likely selling the copper to salvage yards in the area, of which there are 13.

“We are doing follow-ups with each of those,” Cyrus said. “When somebody brings copper to a salvage yard, the identity of the individual is taken and recorded by the salvage yard,” said Cyrus.

Copper wire theft has arisen as a significant issue in several locations in the U.S. Recently, police in Albany, Georgia arrested two men alleged to be part of a copper wire theft ring.
