Alcatel-Lucent releases glossary to teach public about broadband Created: 11/11/2010 9:57:00 AMTelecommunications company Alcatel-Lucent recently released a glossary of terms in an effort to educate the Australian public about the National Broadband Network. The glossary covers a wide range of topics, from bandwidth and access technology to definitions of various types of
computer cable.
The glossary uses layman’s terms to help define technical items. For example, the glossary defines Hybrid Fiber
Coaxial Cable as “a fixed-line access technology combining fiber running to suburban nodes and then coaxial cable for the final network link between the street and the premises.”
“It’s fair to say that recently broadband has become a topic that has Australia talking,” said Geof Heydon, Alcatel-Lucent’s director of digital economies, to Computerworld Australia. “What’s also fair to say is that telecommunications has a language of its own, and not one that is always easily understood by the unwary individual straying into the technical realm.”
According to a spokesperson for the company, the glossary’s publication was the result of a rise in public interest in broadband and in industry seeking a greater understanding of the NBN.
Alcatel-Lucent has been expanding its presence in telecommunications. The company recently announced plans to deploy Asia’s first 4G network.
