HDMI forcing component connections into obscurity
Created: 2/7/2011 11:41:48 AM

In a recent question answer session with readers, the Oakland Tribune's technology expert, Don Lindich, said component cables are quickly becoming obsolete and HDMI cords are becoming the standard, especially on Blu-ray players.

Lindich was responding to a question from a reader who owns an older high-definition television without any HDMI ports. After attempting to use component and getting a scrambled image, the user realized that there was a problem.

Lindich explained that most Blu-ray players are currently designed without digital component functionality. Instead, manufacturers are focusing on HDMI cables, which are capable of higher resolutions and carry digital video and audio through a single connection.

For those who do not want to upgrade their TV to handle an HDMI connection, Lindich recommended considering an adaptor, such as a passive switchbox, to convert the signal to a compatible format to work with the older high-definition TV.

In a recent Fox News report, experts from the Geek Squad were asked to compare RCA cables and HDMI cables when connecting to a new high-definition television. The experts said HDMI is almost always preferable when it is an option because the high-quality digital signal can carry both audio and video transmission through a single cord.
