AMD announces new HDMI adapterCreated: 9/13/2010 7:18:36 AMAMD, the company behind Radeon graphics cards, has developed a new adaptor for HDMI cables that provides an affordable way to create a multi-monitor set up with more than two computers.
Typically, computer monitors use either VGA, DVI or HDMI connections. As DVI and HDMI are capable of high-definition resolutions, VGA has pretty much become obsolete. HDMI sits at the top of the market because it is capable of transferring sound and video through a single connection, according to CRN Tech.
A fourth, lesser known type of connection exists as well - Displayport. Essentially, Displayport performs the same function as HDMI, with a slight difference. Video cards contain an internal clock that properly times the sending of signal through a video chord. This means that a card can only be connected to a monitor if it has enough clocks to handle the wire. Displayport, however, has its own built in clock, making it possible to plug into more devices.
The problem that results is most monitors do not not support Displayport, as HDMI has become the primary chord choice for the mainstream market. AMD has solved this quandary with its newly released Displayport to HDMI adaptor.
Previously, adaptors of this nature had to be powered, creating an expensive and messy connection of wires. AMD's new adapter requires no external power, and will allow users to connect their video cards to multiple monitors with ease.
