Calculate a rough estimate for Fiber Span link loss or Power Budget. Determine whether you will have enough power to span the link, or whether the power will be too high, thus requiring additional attenuation.
Power Budget calculations are only rough estimates and should be considered as such. For more accurate values, use an Optical Power Meter.
Operating Bitrate
Select the appropriate value based on your planned bitrate. If you are running 100Base or 1000Base, choose 1 Gbps or lower. If you are running 10GBase or higher, choose the last option. Margins such as SPM, SRS, and PMD must be taken into acount at higher bitrates.

Minimum Transmitter Output Power (dBm)
This is the minimum amount of power that the transmitter device will output in dBm. Refer to the devices documentation for this value.
Maximum Transmitter Output Power (dBm)
This is the maximum amount of power that the transmitter device will output in dBm. Refer to the devices documentation for this value.
Minimum Receiver Sensitivity (dBm)
This is the minimum amount of power required in order for the receiving device to be capable of discerning the signal. Measured in dBm, you should find this information in the devices documentation.
Maximum Receiver Sensitivity (dBm)
This is the maximum amount of power that the receiving device can handle before becoming over saturated. Saturation causes high bit error rates (BER) and can eventually damage the receiving sensors. Measured in dBm, you should find this information in the devices documentation.

Fiber Cable Type
Different fiber cable types have different power loss values. Furthermore, running different wavelengths of light down those fibers also affects attenuation. For this calculation we assume multimode types are graded index fiber. 62.5@850-3.3dB/km, @1310-0.9dB/km, 50@850-2.7dB/km, @1310-0.7dB/km, 9@1310-0.5dB/km, @1550-0.4dB/km
Fiber Cable Length (km)
Length in kilometers of the fiber cable from the transmitter device to the receiving device. If there are splices or passive devices linking fiber cables together, specify the total sum of the lengths from transmitter to receiver. This is used along with fiber cable type to determine a factor of power loss.
Number of Splices
Splices along a fiber run cause additional attenuation or power loss. A splice can be either a mechanical, or a fusion splice, the latter being superior in that it exhibits less loss. If you have splices along your run, specify how many and then choose which type below.
Splice Type
A splice can be either a mechanical, or a fusion splice, the latter being superior in that it exhibits less loss. For this calculation we assume each mechanical splice will result in 0.5dB of attenuation and each fusion splice will exhibit a 0.05dB loss.
Number of Passive Devices (eg. Patch Panel)
Passive devices, such as patch panels, couplers or adapters, along a fiber run cause additional power loss or attenuation. For simplification, we assume a 2dB loss in this calculation for each passive device along the fiber span.
Number of Factory Terminated Connectors
Each connector along the fiber span will exhibit a measurable amount of power loss. Factory terminated connectors are superior in that they result in less loss than field terminated connectors. For this calculation, we assume each factory terminated connector will result in 0.5dB of attenuation.
Number of Field Terminated Connectors
Each connector along the fiber span will exhibit a measurable amount of power loss. Field terminated connectors result in higher attenuation values over factory terminated connectors. For this calculation, we assume each field terminated connector will result in 1dB of attenuation.

Gigabit Ethernet Fiber Media Converter - UTP to 1000Base-ZX - ST Singlemode, 70km, 1550nm (DFB)
The Media Converter complies with IEEE 802.3z, IEEE 802.3AB Standards. It is designed to convert data signal between 10/100/1000 Base-T and 1000Base-LX fast Ethernet. It supports 10/100/1000Base-T and 1000Base-LX applications. The data signal converted by such high performance media converter can be transmitted up to 80Km maximum by fiber-optical cable. The Converter is equipped with single fiber optic connectors (One for transmitting-TX and another for receiving-RX) and one RJ-45 Jack and one external pwer supply receptacle. Six LED indicators are built-in for easy diagnosing and monitoring the status of power, Unshielded Twisted Paired (UTP) Link, UTP Activity, Fiber Link, Fiber Activity, Full duplex and data rates. It can be configured automatically for Full Duplex or Half Duplex operation. It is compact, cost-effective, low dissipative, high reliable and stable. It can be used in standalone applications, or Rack-Mounted applications where multiple media converters can be inserted into a rack-mount chassis (up to 16 units), and allowing all the converters to be powered by a single internal power supply.

Fiber Optic Attenuator, Fixed - LC/APC 20dB
This Fiber Optic Attenuator, Fixed - LC/APC 20dB is necessary to prevent over saturating an optical receiver when the optical power is too high. Using attenuators will ensure low bit error rates and prevent damage to receiving components. LC male-female, 20db

Silicon ZOOM 2 Optical Power Meter with Fault Locator / Finder
The Silicon ZOOM 2 is one of the world's most economical and precise fiber optic power meters delivering professional performance and a complete feature set for optical loss testing in multimode networks. The Silicon ZOOM 2 is NIST Traceable at 850nm which makes it ideal for multimode loss testing. The Silicon ZOOM 2 can store reference values for all of its calibrated wavelengths, and displays optical power as an absolute value in dBm or relative to a user set "zero" reference in dB. It has an intuitive two-button interface, with one button controlling power and wavelength selection, while the other is used to toggle between dBm, dB, and uW, as well as setting the optical reference, or "zero". Other standard features include a 4-digit, 0.01dB resolution display, battery status indicator, and a 2.5mm Universal detector port that is compatible with FC, ST, SC, DIN, and any other 2.5 mm ferrule connectors! The following accessories are included with each Silicon ZOOM 2: rugged rubber boot, carrying strap, NIST certificate of calibration, and operations manual on CD.
