Four Inputs and One Component Video Output: Supports all HDTV modes 480i through 1080p, including 720p and 1080i. Each input consists of five analog channels (Pr/Pb/Y/Left/Right). Analog audio channels are routed using the same high-bandwith relay switches as the video channels. Passive Switching of Analog Signals: The VS431 combines the best of both worlds by passively switching analog signals. When compared to a active analog switch (using analog switching ICs), relays are a more expensive solution for routing signals. However relays offer a switching quality like that of physically swapping cables. Component video is a video signal that has been split into two or more components. In popular use, it refers to a type of analog video information that is transmitted or stored as three separate signals. Component video can be contrasted with composite video (NTSC, PAL or SECAM) in which all the video information is combined into a single line-level signal. Like composite, component video cables do not carry audio and are often paired with audio cables. When used without any other qualifications the term component video generally refers to analog YPbPr component video with sync on luma. 720p is the shorthand name for a category of HDTV video modes. The number 720 stands for the 720 horizontal scan lines of display resolution (also known as 720 pixels of vertical resolution), while the letter p stands for progressive scan or non-interlaced. When broadcast at 60 frames per second, 720p features the highest temporal (motion) resolution possible under the ATSC standard. Progressive scanning reduces the need to prevent flicker by filtering out fine details, so spatial resolution (sharpness) is much closer to 1080i than the number of scan lines would suggest. High-definition television (or HDTV) is a digital television broadcasting system with higher resolution than traditional television systems (standard-definition TV, or SDTV). HDTV is digitally broadcast; the earliest implementations used analog broadcasting, but today digital television (DTV) signals are used, requiring less bandwidth due to digital video compression.
