Used as a connection point or aggregation point in the wiring closets of homes and businesses, a Patch Panel provides the user with the option to reconfigure where the lines are routed to quickly. This 12 port rack mount device is Category 5e compliant and perfect for small companies or homes. A punch down tool is required to terminate the cables coming from the wall to the back of this device. Cat 5 e cable is an enhanced version of Cat 5 that adds specifications for far end crosstalk. It was formally defined in 2001 as the TIA/EIA-568-B standard, which no longer recognizes the original Cat 5 specification. Although 1000BASE-T was designed for use with Cat 5 cable, the tighter specifications associated with Cat 5e cable and connectors make it an excellent choice for use with 1000BASE-T. A patch panel or patch bay, not to be confused with the jackfield, is a panel, typically rackmounted, that houses cable connections. One typically shorter patch cable will plug into the front side, whereas the back holds the connection of a much longer and more permanent cable. The assembly of hardware is arranged so that a number of circuits, usually of the same or similar type, appear on jacks for monitoring, interconnecting, and testing circuits in a convenient, flexible manner.
